Recirculate Announces Workshop Focused on EV Battery Supply Chain Definition

  • The purpose of the event is to collect EV battery supply chain participants together and share learnings and insights from Recirculate about the  EV battery lifecycle, including supply chain definition, battery passports and a battery marketplace.
  • The workshop will present innovative solutions aimed to strengthen the European battery supply chain and make it more efficient and transparent for second life applications.

Berlin, 4 March 2025The EU-funded Recirculate project is organizing its first online workshop Powering Circularity: Defining the EV Battery Value Chain” in order to dive into EV battery supply chain and explore the battery value chain, from battery materials production to recycling, and second-life, along with digital tools such as battery passports & marketplaces. The event will be held on the 12th of March, at 11.00 CET.

Mapping the Stakeholders

A successful EV battery second-life ecosystem depends on seamless collaboration. Recirculate  speakers will define key stakeholders—including raw material suppliers, battery manufacturers, OEMs, recyclers, logistics and other service providers, regulators, and consumers—and explore their essential roles in driving circularity.

Understanding the Challenges

Recycling and giving batteries a second life presents a range of technical, economic, logistical, and regulatory hurdles, including:

  • Technical: Complex battery chemistries, intricate designs, and inconsistent recycled material quality.
  • Economic: High recycling costs compared to virgin material production.
  • Logistical: Gaps in collection, transportation, and processing infrastructure.
  • Regulatory: Lack of standardization and clear incentives for circularity.

The Recirculate workshop will deep dive into the key challenges and explore industry-driven solutions.

Addressing Real-World Challenges

Using insights from Recirculate members, we will discuss specific industry pain points and the solutions being developed to tackle them.

The Role of Battery and Product Passports and the Battery Marketplace

To support circularity, digital tools such as Battery Marketplaces and Battery Passports are becoming essential. We will dive into the latest developments for:

  • Battery Passports, which provide a digital record of each battery’s materials, chemistry, and lifecycle history. They help stakeholders across the value chain track and optimize battery usage, making the assessment, repair, reuse, and recycling of batteries and components more efficient and transparent. We will also cover the use of AI for data input and EU Battery Regulation compliance.
  • A Battery Marketplace, which facilitates the exchange of used batteries, second-life applications, and related services. We will explore an MVP marketplace built specifically as part of Recirculate, that aims to create opportunities for reusing batteries before they reach the recycling stage, maximizing their lifecycle.
